Trekkie Turnout: Shouldn’t Star Trek be selling better right now?
Given the release next week of J.J. Abrams’ looong-anticipated Star Trek movie, wouldn’t you expect sales from the series to be up across the board? It’s a trend we witnessed and blogged about when Watchmen was released, and one you generally see when major hype meets a consumer market… So then why aren’t we seeing a spike in sales? It’s not as if there’s a lack of Star Trek by-products to be bought and sold… For decades, the series’ merchandise has sold at a ridiculously high clip — everything from vintage toys and collectibles, to new media and memorabilia — so maybe that’s exactly it: maybe, as we suggested regarding the Hannah Montana movie a few weeks back (our sincerest apologies for comparing the two), that ceiling’s simply been hit and is now holding strong…
(Because embittered Star Trek fans can’t be doing it by themselves, can they?)
